The Cheshire Master swimming Gala took place on Saturday 24th September at Macclesfield Leisure Centre. The team take took part consisted of Frances West (novice), Ellen Summers, Fiona Sadler, Clare Barrington, James Barrington (novice), Jonathan (Bill from Buxton) Oddy, Ben Mattinson (Swim Captain) and Matt Seaborn.
A big thank you must first go to the poolside officials who do a very good job of keeping the competition running smoothly and of course to our own Alan Hallmark who did the commentary.
A second thank you must go to Matt Seaborn, who we called at the last possible minute to come and swim in the relays and help out the Men’s team. Hopefully we did not completely ruin his night!
The results of the competition are below and we also did very well in the team event. Trafford Metro (445) ran away with the competition but second place was a closely fought contest and we only lost by 19 points to Warrington Dolphins. They finished with 253 points and we had 234.
Frances led the evening off with a fantastic swim in the 400m freestyle as she won her age group and did the distance in a time of 6:06.73.
Both novices, Frances (again!) and James posted good times in the novice races and time adjusted, won and collected lots of points for the team.
In the individual events, the girls lead the way by competing in nearly all the events other than Breaststroke. Fiona finally broke her duck and her ‘Trafford Metro Nemesis’ by winning backstroke gold and only missing out on another in the IM by 0.05 of a second. Clare won her age group in both Fly and IM as did Ellen.
Frances posted a very good time for her Fly and was extremely pleased with that achievement.
The Men, James and Bill competed very well in their events and did very good times, but unfortunately happened to be in the age groups with extremely good men from Trafford Metro.
The relays finished off the night and were great fun for the people taking part and the public on the side yelling encouragement.
The Men’s relay team (Ben, Bill, James & Matt) won both their age group relays with very good times, but the Girls team (Clare, Ellen, Fiona & Frances) were exhausted but still pushed hard. Unfortunately we were outclassed by the other teams.
The last race of the evening and a bit of fun (!) was the Cannonball or 8 x 50m freestyle relay . We dragged ourselves through this and although we were not officially entered, we finished third, which is where we finished the evening as a team anyway.
Congratulations to the 8 competitors, who hopefully enjoyed the event. Roll on next year!
